Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
With over 600,000 acres, the Anza Borrego Desert State Park is California's largest State Park and is filled with vast valleys, badlands, canyons, oases, and mountain ranges. Located east of San Diego, this park provides 100's of miles of hiking and riding trails that showcase scenic wildflowers, palm groves and cacti. The park’s name is derived from a combination of the name of Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza and the Spanish word "borrego," referring to bighorn sheep.
One of the most educational elements about the park is that it houses over 500 different organisms ranging from microscopic plant pollen and spores to the largest of mammoth elephants giving paleontologists a glimpse of ancient life forms. With the park's remarkable fossil record and the eroded badlands, we can discern that it was not always the arid desert that it is now.
The Anza Borrego Desert is also associated with gold mining. Even into the early 1900's, people were leading prospecting parties into this desert park and visitors still inquire about the famous Pegleg mine, of which has never been found.
About 650,000 people visit the park each year and give into its amazing beauty and glimpses of wildlife. Seasonal temperatures can be extreme and layered clothing as is plenty of water is always recommended. As always, if you do not know the park well, we would not recommend venturing off to far off marked trails or highways. Getting lost without a map is fairly easy to do.
